"I will not kill you at once. Sixteen years of bitter hardship cannot possibly be brushed away in a single blow."
― Hilmes to Arslan in The Heroic Legend of Arslan (anime), "Two Princes"

Hilmes (ヒルメス Hirumesu? ), translated as Hermes in the Viewster English sub, also known as Lord Silvermask (銀仮面卿 Ginkamen Kyō? ), was the adopted son of King Osroes V and a non-blood related cousin of Arslan. He joined the Lusitanian Army and became a high commander in order to invade Pars and claim the throne.

Appearance[]

2013 Manga and Anime[]

Hilmes was a very handsome man around his twenties with dark brown hair slicked back, with some strands hanging above his eyes. The right side of his face was burnt and it is concealed with a silver mask.

He was usually seen wearing a black cloak on top of his outfits. Underneath his cloak, he wore a black long-sleeved shirt, black pants and knee high boots.

Personality[]

Hilmes was a man with high ambitions, wanting to be the successor of the throne before anyone. He was also cruel and was willing to do anything to achieve his ambitions. He slew whoever stood in his way, including innocent people. He was extremely short-tempered, but was able to suppress his anger if it was inappropriate for the situation.

He bore an undying hatred towards Andragoras and enjoyed seeing him in pain as revenge for what happened 16 years ago.

Hilmes firmly believed that the throne is his right, and never questioned his own abilities. The fact that many people among the skilled ones, such as Daryun and Narsus, chose to follow Arslan enraged him.

A very skillful swordman, he was able to match Daryun, possibly being even better than him. However, due to the assassination attempt 16 years ago in which he was almost burned to death, Hilmes had acquired a deep fear of fire.

He showed his good side when dealing with the blind princess of Maryam.

History[]

Being the son of the former King Osroes, he was left to die in his burning home by his uncle and the current King of Pars, King Andragoras, which left him with a hideous scar on the right side of his face. Due to this traumatic event, he became pyrophobic.

Hilmes was later revealed to be the son of Osroes' and Andragoras' father, Gotarzes II, while his mother is Osroes' wife. This means, that Hilmes was the younger half-brother of Osroes and Andragoras.

Relationships[]

Princess Irina[]

They first met at the Kingdom of Maryam when Hilmes was taken under by its King. He took interest with her since she was blind. He became her constant companion where Hilmes would describe things for her. He cares deeply for her to the point that he gave her a promise that he would take her with him if Hilmes could seize the throne. They met again on the land of Pars when the princess went looking for him.

Andragoras III[]

Andragoras III is Hilmes' uncle. Hilmes bears a strong hatred towards him, especially for attempting to kill Hilmes in a fire.

Arslan[]

Arslan is Hilmes' cousin. Hilmes hates him for being Andragoras' son and "illegitimate" heir.

Bahman[]

Bahman was Hilmes's teacher. Bahman taught Hilmes swordsmanship and how to use the bow.

Abilities[]

Hilmes is a skilled swordsman, capable of defeating or withstanding dangerous opponents such as Vahriz, Narsus and Daryun. He also shows the ability to attract firm loyalty from his followers, like Xandes and Sam, a fact that lead Kharlan, a distinguished general, to betray his own country to Lusitania in order to permit Hilmes to take the throne.
