Daryun (ダリューン Daryūn? ) is one of the main characters of the anime series based on the Arakawa manga. He is the nephew of Vahriz and one of the members of the Camp of Arslan that fights against Lusitanian invasion.
Appearance[]
Daryun has long black hair, which he keeps in a low ponytail. He has narrow brown eyes and thick eyebrows.
Personality[]
Daryun is a stern but loyal man. He has utmost loyalty to King Andragoras and to his son Arslan, and is willing to risk his life to either of them. As a veteran warrior, he is calm, serious and skilled earning the nickname the Knight in Black Armour.
Plot[]
Ecbatana is Burning[]
While Daryun was taking care of his horse, he saw some soldiers running and tried to look at what is happening, then someone suddenly entered the room saying that Prince Arslan has benn taken as a hostage by a Lusitanian. Daryun followed the soldiers to find the Prince. When he saw Arslan, he had been surrounded by soldiers and a child took him and jumped into the river, terrifying Arslan. But he got relaxed when he saw Arslan unhurt. The Lusitanian stole a horse and attemted to escape, but Daryun took out his bow and arrow to shoot him but Prince Arslan rushed into his vision and made him miss. After he came near the prince, Daryun asked why did he stop him, he said it just happened and they agreed on saying that Daryun failed to make a good shot. When they were on their way back to the fort, they saw the three boys, captured by the soldiers. They were the reason why Arslan got captured and a soldier wanted them to be punished for endangering Arslan’s life. However, Arslan asked the soldier to release them. The childs were moved by his decision and swore to join the army and protect Arslan’s life. This made Daryun happy as having good soldiers were needed for a king. On their way back home, Arslan asked Daryun why Lusitanians didn’t submit into be coming slaves and Daryun replied that when Arslan ascends to the throne, he will intorduce a friend of his to him, but then asked Arslan to forget what he said.
Before the battle, Kharlan came to Daryun and told him that the enemy is planning something and he needs to talk with the King about this situation. Daryun came to the King’s tent and advised him to retreat. The king got furious by this request and dismissed Daryun from his post as Marzban, calling him a coward. Lord Vahriz came into the room and apologised for Daryun’s attitude, trying to calm the King who reduced his rank to that of a mere knight. When they got out, his uncle made him swear an oath to protect the prince and Daryun did so. During the battle, Daryun saw an enemy who had the prince’s helmet and killed him. While Kharlan was attacking to
the prince, Daryun rushed and attacked Kharlan.
Kharlan told him to listen, but Daryun had no intention to do so and this forced Kharlan to retreat, managing to save. Daryun gave Arslan his horse and found another on efor himself. On their way they saved a Parsian from an enemy soldier. The soldier stated that the King fled the battle , and then died due to his heavy injuries. The prince wanted to return to the capital, but Daryun said that the road will be dangerous so they should go to his friend Narsus for his assistance.
Siege of Ecbatana[]
Together with Arslan, he passed through Kharlan’s castle and entered into a forest. On their way, he gave Arslan some information about Narsus. An arrow suddenly flew towards them and they heard a voice saying that if they advance any further, they will die. When Daryun introduced himself, Elam came and apologised for his behaviour. He accompanied them to Narsus’s hideout. Narsus accepted them into his home and smiled after seeing his old friend. When they started to eat dinner, Narsus told Arslan how he defeated the Alliance of Three Kingdoms without a single soldier. Narsus then talked with Daryun about Atropatene and Daryun told him that Kharlan had betrayed them and they concluded that the Lusitanians have a resourcefull man among them. Daryun told Narsus that he should stop making bad
paintings and help Prince Arslan. He mocked with Narsus’s paintings and then Arslan asked what he should do, Narsus told him to abolish slavery and that this way of thinking of his made the king hate him. But Arslan said that his father also hates him and Daryun too, so they will make a good company and this surprised Narsus. They spent the night at Narsus’s house. Before going to sleep he talked with Narsus about the old days and Narsus asked him some questions about Prince Arslan. When he woke up, Kharlan’s men came. When Narsus asked him which road did he take, Daryun told him that they passed near Kharlan’s castle on their way, with a smile on his face. Narsus got furious and said that Daryun was trying to force him to cooperate with them. Before the men entered, Arslan and Daryun hid themselves. During their talk, they said that Vahriz is dead and Daryun got very angry. They offered a position for Narsus, but he refused the offer and captured them with a trap. When he saw Daryun’s face, Narsus told him that he shouldn’t kill them and stated that they should have breakfast. While they were eating, Daryun wanted Narsus to join him and Prince Arslan also requested the same saying that he will make him Court Painter. Narsus gladly accepted this offer and started to tease with Daryun. Arslan also accepted
Elam into their company saying that his cooking is delicious.
They left the house and headed for Ecbatana, but Kharlan’s men were waiting for them, so they took shelter in a cave. Narsus talked about their strategies and stated that Ecbatana is most likely under attack but they can’t help them because the enemy’s numbers are too great. He also told Daryun that they need to focus on capturing Kharlan. After waiting for a while, they left the cave.
Prince Arslan Takes a Stand[]
Elam infiltrated Ecbatana to learn about the enemy’s situation and came back after a while. He said that there aren’t anyone who knows about King Andragoras’s whereabouts and that Kharlan left Ecbatana with a 1000 cavalrymen in search of Arslan. Then Arslan asked Narsus if he knows what Kharlan is planning, and Narsus said that Kharlan will burn villages to lure them out. Arslan didn’t want this to happen and wanted to stop Kharlan. When Daryun became alone with Narsus, he told him that Kharlan is not a simple man and this is probably a trap to lure His Highness out. Narsus replied that he has high hopes for Prince Arslan. Daryun figured out that Narsus was testing Prince Arslan and tried to figure out if he would help the villagers or not. Narsus prepared a plan to capture Kharlan.
Everyhing went according to the plan and Kharlan charged at Arslan but Daryun came to protect Arslan. He tried to provoke Kharlan by saying that he only has the guts to fight with children, and it succeeded. He managed to defeat Kharlan by attacking to his blind spot with the
back of his spear, but Kharlan got struck by his own spear after falling down the hill. Narsus tried to interrogate Kharlan. Kharlan told them the king is alive and died. Two more people had joined their company. They introduced themselves. Narsus said that they must leave before Kharlan’s men come back. Before leaving, Arslan wanted Farangis to offer up an elegy for the death of Kharlan and his men, surprising Daryun. She accepted and started to sing. While Farangis was singing, Daryun asked Narsus if they can trust them or not and Narsus stated that there isn’t any problem and said that their fighting strength increased by half. He also told Daryun that they should go to Ecbatana and look for the king.
Daryun infiltrated Ecbatana with Narsus to learn the King’s whereabouts. When they saw Bodin burning their historical texts, he stated that this goes beyond the action of savages. Narsus said that he wanted to kill that man and leave the king and his brother to Daryun. Daryun agreed. Narsus also told him on their way that Yaldabaoth means sacred ignorance in Archaic Lusitanian and they invaded Pars because their holy book says that the most beautiful and prosperous place in the world belongs to the believers. He asked Narsus how can they take Ecbatana back. Narsus told him that they may use the slaves but it will be very hard to abolish slavery right away. They wanted to get more information and when Narsus defeated Kharlan’s men, he showed up and told a soldier to tell everyhing he knows. He said that the king is alive and the Queen is going to marry with King Innocentius. This greatly shocked Daryun. They once again split up to gather more information.
While he was thinking that how many of the Prince’s allies remain, a man with a silver mask appeared. They fought and he managed to force Daryun back. Then he wanted to know Daryun’s name because of his skill. When told him his name, he started to laugh and said that it was him who killed Vahriz. Enraged by this, Daryun charged at him and broke his mask. This angered him this time and Daryun saw burns on his face. This time he charged at Daryun, even fiercer than before, and while he was about to attack Narsus came and saved him. After Narsus formally introduced himself, Silvermask called him an inept painter and Narsus charged at him. He dodged, but before he could counterattack, Daryun saved his friend. After fighting for a while, more soldiers came and they retreated. On they way back to their hideout, they talked about the Silvermask.
Kashan Fortress[]
After he returned from Ecbatana with Narsus, he told Arslan that his parents are alive. Arslan stated that there are too few of them and asked about the ways to gain more allies, but Narsus stated that it won’t be too easy. In the morning, Narsus went to Kashan Fortress and wanted Lord Hodir to aid Arslan. After a while, Daryun found his company, being chased by Lusitanians, and told everyone to follow him. Suddenly, they heard the voice of a horn and a Parsian army appeared. The archers killed the lot of Lusitanians and forced them to retreat.
They entered Kashan Fortress and a feast was ready for them. When they were about to go to their rooms to rest, Daryun got angry as he wasn’t placed in Arslan’s room to protect him. He said that he would even sleep on the floor so he wouldn't have to leave His Highness, but Narsus told him to stop these acts. In their room he said that Hodir is definitely planning something and Narsus told him that he intends to make his daughter the Queen. He said he doesn’t want to leave the prince with him, but doesn’t want to turn Hodir into his enemy as he has lots of soldiers. Then, Gieve took his sword and tried to attack someone who was in the balcony. It was the prince, he had traversed across the balconies. Daryun got shocked by Arslan doing something this dangerous and blamed himself, but Gieve told him that he is just being overprotective. Arslan told Narsus what Hodir told him. Narsus said that he has done good job and now must get ready to leave at a moment’s notice. He also told Gieve to escort Arslan back to his room and deliver a message to Farangis and gave another job to Elam. Before Arslan called them, he discussed with Daryun if Arslan may be Osroes’s son, but Narsus said that it is impossible.
Then Elam came and Arslan called them. Daryun and others came out and they tried to get out of the castle, but Hodir followed them and apologised. He wanted his men to lead his horse out, but Farangis and Gieve killed them as they were carrying concealed daggers. Soldiers came out and they started to fight. Daryun got down his horse and killed lots of men and then killed Hodir before he reached Arslan and after seeing this, his soldiers stopped fighting. Before they left, Arslan tried to free the slaves but they were angry as Arslan had killed their master. They left and set a camp for the night.
Road to Peshawar[]
After listening the djinns, Farangis stated that the Lusitanians are nearby, so Daryun went to confront them. After fighting for a while, Farangis came and stated that she will lend him a hand. They killed lots of soldiers, and then, Kharlan’s son, Xandes appeared and challenged Daryun. He attacked Farangis to keep her out of the fight, then attacked Daryun with a giant sword. Farangis killed his horse and Daryun knocked him down. While escaping, Farangis stated that Daryun hesitated to kill Xandes.
While they were headed to Peshawar, Xandes’s group caught up with them once again. Xandes challenged Daryun to a one-on-one fight, but while they were fighting, a man came out of the ground and attacked him. Farangis stated that it is sorcery. The sorcerer’s attack made him fell down his horse. While the enemy was about to attack him, Arslan came and saved him. The enemy came out of the ground and attacked Arslan. Arslan fell down from his horse, but Elam caught him before he hit the ground. The enemy once again came to attack Arslan, but after seeing this, Daryun pushed Xandes down, killed everyone on his way and saved Arslan. He the defeated Xandes and he tried to escape. Farangis shot him with an arrow. They defeated the enemy. Daryun came and apologised to have placed him in danger, but Arslan said that he is fine thanks Elam for saving him. He also stated that Daryun always saves him, so there isn’t a problem if he saves him for once. Daryun told himself that for the sake of Arslan he will continue to wield his sword. They made their way to Peshawar.
Two Princes[]
As they got closer to Peshawar, the Lusitanians layed numerous ambushes for them. Before the last ambush, Kishward and Narsus appeared with soldiers on their sides. Kishward killed lots of them and forced the Lusitanians to retreat. Kishward welcomed Arslan and his company to Peshawar.
When they entered Peshawar, the soldiers started to salute Arslan and others, but the company was shocked as Alfreed stated that she is Narsus’ wife. Daryun was very amused. Together with Gieve, they started to tease Narsus and Narsus finally said that they got everything wrong and asked Alfreed to explain. She said that they aren’t officially married, so she is his lover. This shocked the Daryun and others even more. Narsus said that he just saved her when she was getting attacked and tried to avoid further questions. Daryun asked him what he meant by saving, and Narsus told Daryun that the Silvermask appeared and promised to tell him the details later. Bahman and Kishward came and Bahman welcomed Arslan. Kishward stated that the 80,000 soldiers in Peshawar will swear their loyalty to Arslan.
The next day, they held a meeting and Bahman stated that they can’t raise an army. Daryun got surprised and angrily asked Bahman what does he mean. Bahman stated that there is nothing to be gained from rushing things, so they shall at least for the new year to attack. Daryun stated that the best decision is to defeat the Lusitanians before they make more damage to Pars but Narsus stopped Daryun and started to tease with Bahman. After Narsus calling him an old coward, Bahman became angry and left the room. But Narsus stated that he pretended to be angry to avoid further questions. After the meeting, Kishward told them that Vahriz sent Bahman a message before the battle, and Bahman has been acting weird since then. This surprised Daryun, and he started to wonder what did his uncle knew.
The Silvermask had intruded the castle, so Daryun came to protect Arslan. While he was fighting with Narsus, Daryun stayed with Arslan. Silvermask jumped down but Kishward attacked him and said that he will slay anyone who invades the castle He managed to forced Silvermask back so, he once again jumped down, but Daryun and Narsus confronted him there. While they were fighting, Arslan once again told him to say who he is. The Silvermask stated that he is the son of the previous king Osroes, Hilmes. While everyone was shocked by this, Hilmes defeated Farangis and charged at Arslan, but Bahman protected him by taking the blow on himself. Bahman told Hilmes to withdraw. Daryun came and tried to go after Hilmes, but Bahman stopped him and said that if he kills Hilmes, the bloodline of the royal family of Pars will end. This shocked Daryun. Bahman told Arslan to become a good king and died. Suddenly, a soldier came and reported that a Shinduran force numbering 20 to 30 thousand is breaching the border under the cover of night.

Arslan[]
Daryun is Arslan's loyal retainer who serves him without fault. He is very protective of Arslan and will give his own life to protect him. During the Battle of Atropatene, Daryun challenged Kharlan and his large numbers of men to rescue Arslan. Daryun thinks of Arslan will become a great king and give Pars peace. Arslan also believes in Daryun and is protective towards him as he is always concerned when Daryun is fighting'with a large number of enemies. As they travel together, Daryun becomes even more loyal to him as a person. Daryun is Arslan's closest companion and the two value each other greatly. Even after learning that Arslan doesn't have the blood of Pars Royal family, Daryun still supports Arslan and says that it doesn't matter if he is the son of King Andragoras or not.
Narsus[]
Daryun's friend, before Narsus was excommunicated, the two were enemies, nowadays, their relationship is more vitriolic, but still close. The two often engage in banter and butt heads, but their friendship is strong. Daryun values Narsus' intellect and strategies, and Narsus respects Daryun's fighting abilities.
Vahriz[]
Daryun loved uncle and listened to him moreso than the king at times. Vahriz is the one who tasks Daryun in looking after Arslan. Upon learning of his death, Daryun becomes angered, suggesting he loved his uncle. The two held a very professional relationship, showing little affection; however, that does not mean it didn't exist.
